Platano and Collard Greens Open Mic

June30
Center City Presents : Platano and Collard Greens
This event had a beautiful turn out.  I was honored to have been the featured artist of the evening. When i was asked to be apart of the show random thoughts of what to share came to mind, however i didnt have to go far . The original broadway production followed the same story of my life.  From the parents to the snickering comments I’ve recieved for dating a   “brother”.  I shared a few peices this night but the high light to my performance showed the vulnerable side to me..  I shared  ” the story of my unborn child the mullato”. for those of you who are not aware of what a mullato is i will give you a short understanding of it.
:
Most people are not aware that it is considered a somewhat derogatory word ,
but a Mulatto is a person with European and African ancestry.
It isnt just having ” one white parent and another black, and labeling their child grey…
From Latin mūlus, meaning mule, the hybrid offspring of a horse and a donkey.
“The Story of my unborn child, the  Mullato”
“Your label will not label me
Your census cannot define me
Black, Hispanic, Taino, Guyanese
Yes I am all of these
I choose to define myself”

NYC Latina Writers Group At The Bowery

June30

On June 25th i had the pleasure to share the stage with the NYC Latina writers group as well as some talented artist.  The featured artist of the event was Lemon Anderson who never disapoints. It was a special event for different reasons,  but overall the most memorable part of the evening was the atmosphere.

I performed for the first time Genetic Disaproval. This peice was intended to to have been read for a PLATANO and  COLLARD GREEN event  I was the featured artist to, however It didnt seem to fit my direction. This peice speaks about my second home,  Los Guaricanos, in the Dominican Republic. Strong peice .  I remember looking up and connecting with everyones eyes.. we were in sync..

The Tower of Babel Installation:

The Tower of Babel is a group art installation by inter-disciplinary artists ChangoBi, Chris Yemaya, Nia Andino, Ana Martell and David Quinones.

History of the Tower of Babel: The Tower of Babel according to the Book of Genesis, was an enormous tower built at the city of Babylon. According to the biblical account, a united humanity of the generations following the Great Flood, speaking a single language and migrating from the east, participated in the building. The people decided their city should have a tower so immense that it would have “its top in the heavens.”However, the Tower of Babel was not built for the worship and praise of God, but was instead dedicated to the glory of man, to “make a name” for the builders: “Then they said, ‘Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves; otherwise we shall be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.’” (Genesis 11:4). The Book of Genesis then relates how God, displeased with the builders’ intent, came down and confused their languages and scattered the people throughout the earth.

In the art installation the Tower will be made up of individual self-portrait cube pieces made by each artist that will be combined and stacked to form a tower representing each persons spiritual journey. It will be symbolic of a united collective reaching for a symbolic “heaven”. Yet like in the historical Tower of Babel through the self portrait pieces each artist will demonstrate their own internal struggle with understanding the divine.
